Dahlia ‘Great Silence’ has been revealed as the top dahlia in the People’s Choice vote at the RHS Wisley 2024 plant trial, as chosen by visitors
In 2024, the RHS People’s Choice vote was introduced to the Dahlia Trial at RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey. This exciting addition invited visitors to take part in selecting their favourite dahlia from a spectacular display of more than 95 different dahlia cultivars. The trial showcased a diverse range of dahlias, from the classic pompons and decoratives to the more intricate fimbriated and anemone-flowered varieties, each blooming in a dazzling array of colours.
The public response was overwhelming, with visitors casting their votes for the dahlia that most captivated them. Reflecting on the results Karen Leonard, RHS Trials Project Leader, said: “Dahlia ‘Great Silence’ was a standout performer during the trial with hugh quantities of peach and pink blooms on long, dark stems. A truly magnificent dahlia.”

This interactive vote not only highlighted the beauty of dahlias but also engaged the public in celebrating the diversity of one of the garden world’s most beloved flowers.

First place
Dahlia ‘Great Silence’
This dahlia has large, striking peach and pink blooms with a delicate, soft appearance. A recent introduction, it is known for its elegant form and robust growth. The sheer quantity of flowers on long, dark stems make it a popular choice for gardens and cut flowers. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.
Voters’ comments included: The flower colours compliments the green foliage, and the layering of the petals is almost symmetrically identical for every flower on the plant. A beautiful flower.
Second place
Dahlia ‘Fire Mountain’
This Dahlia variety has serrated, dark bronze leaves that contrast its vivid red, small decorative flowers. Noteworthy for its vigour and healthy foliage, it is ideal for exotic planting schemes.
Voters’ comments included: Striking red flowers against the dark foliage. Looks strong and healthy.
Third place
Dahlia ‘Rainbow Silence’
Dahlia ‘Rainbow Silence’ was consistently strong performer over two seasons. A bushy perennial that grows to around 150cm in height, with dark green serrated leaves. Featuring salmon-red double flowers, with yellow centres that appear from summer through until the first frosts.
Voters’ comments included: This dahlia brings the flower power. The purple colour in the buds complements the pink and orange blooms.
What visitors loved
During the summer period at RHS Wisley, the dahlia trial showcased a spectacular variety of different dahlia blooms in the Trials Garden in a range of sizes and colours.
