The Biophilic Blueprint

Right Plant. Right Place. Right Person.

The Biophilic Blueprint is the next evolution of GrowTropical’s 2024 RHS Urban Show exhibit, Happy Houseplants. While the original exhibit categorised plants purely by environmental needs, including sun, shade and humidity, this updated concept, created for the Malvern Plants & People theme, maps these plant requirements onto human lifestyle and wellbeing zones.

Instead of asking: Where will this plant survive? The Biophilic Blueprint asks: How does this plant support your life? It explores the symbiosis between plants and human happiness, reframing plant education as a guide to enhancing everyday wellbeing.

The garden is built around a deconstructed, skeletal wireframe forming a triangle at a 1:1 scale. The three corners define distinct “rooms,” each corresponding to a key plant environment:

The Sanctuary

This is a restful, calming bedroom space designed for relaxation and unwinding. It features easy-to-care-for, low-light houseplants that naturally purify the air and create a cocooned atmosphere. Visitors can imagine how a bedroom filled with lush greenery can support rest, recovery and mental wellbeing, offering a peaceful retreat from the stresses of daily life.

The Social Hub

An energetic and bright living zone designed to encourage social interaction, self-expression and visual impact. Here, plants are paired with statement furniture pieces to create a dynamic, aspirational environment. The space demonstrates how sun loving houseplants can transform living areas into vibrant, joyful hubs, while also serving as living decor that energises the home and engages visitors in a sensory experience.

The Immersion Spa 

A lush, moisture-rich environment that supports rituals, hydration and sensory reset. This zone showcases humidity loving houseplants such as Alocasia, Anthurium and other textured, tropical foliage. Visitors are invited to explore how high humidity spaces can create a spa-like atmosphere at home, where plants not only thrive but also enhance mood, well-being and daily self-care routines.
