Royal Bank of Canada Garden

The feeling of a Canadian boreal forest is brought to life by mature pines, glacial boulders and a copper lined, burnt larch wood canopy reminiscent of wooden shelters created by hunters and travellers exploring the riverside

Show Gardens

At the show

  • Angular paving formed from slices of glacial granite boulders
  • Damp woodland planting reflects the fact that 25% of the worlds unfrozen fresh water is found in Canada
  • The garden's five jack pines (Pinus banksiana) are around 50 years old

From the garden

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and the 10th year of the RBC Blue Water Project™, the Royal Bank of Canada Garden is inspired by the vast and ecologically vital boreal forest and freshwater lakes of Canada.

Stretching from the Yukon to Newfoundland and Labrador, the habitat incorporates exposed bedrock, endless forests, rushing rivers and broad wetlands. The garden seeks to create a space inspired by this landscape, rather than to recreate it. A wilder garden folds around manmade elements, crafted from materials evocative of the boreal.

Designer Charlotte Harris leads an all-female design team, including architect, technical detailer and horticulturists.

The garden seeks to create a space inspired by this landscape, rather than to recreate  it – this is reflected in the planting with a mix of Canadian natives and similar planting from closer to home.
