Did you know...

  • Paving with words from Up 'ere and the engraving of the Manchester Bee greet the visitor upon entrance to the garden, where a gravel path leads you through the space, alongside borders that are buzzing with bees
  • Beyond the back wall of the garden, boulders, ferns, long grasses and silver birch trees reflect the wild landscape that would exist beyond the garden

About the garden

Designed and built by experts from Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria, the garden is a celebration of the North West. It is inspired by the poem Up ’ere by Tony Walsh and by the work of Lancashire landscape architect Thomas Mawson.

The Mawson influence can be seen in the craftsman-built dry-stone wall with arched windows and the circular stone pillars, and in the abundant flower borders contained within a formal framework, which is typical of Mawson’s designs.

The garden is intended as a place for reflection with poignant words from Walsh’s poem carved into the stone, highlighting the spirit of the people of the North West. The garden is to be relocated to the Willow Garden Project in Fleetwood.
