This herbaceous perennial forms a clump of sparsely branched stems bearing slender, toothed leaves. In late summer it produces narrow flower spikes composed of numerous tiny yellow flowers.

A short-lived, perennial meadow grass forming loose clumps of short, relatively broad leaves. The unbranched flower spikes appear early, in late spring or early summer.
