Create your own terrarium workshops at the RHS Urban Show

Build your own terrarium to take home at the RHS Urban Show in Manchester (18 – 21 April 2024)

A top houseplant trend,

terrariums are sealed glass containers for growing small tropical plants. The closed environment keeps in moisture and warmth, so they’re ideal for plants that like humidity, and they’re easy to maintain.

These baby greenhouses look fabulous grouped with other plants on a windowsill, or as a focal feature on a table or shelf. The finished product can be expensive to buy, and although they look impossibly stylish, they are actually lots of fun to make.

The RHS is running workshops, exclusive for visitors to the Urban Show, with everything you need to create your very own, bespoke terrarium. Upgrade your trip to Depot Mayfield in April with a unique mini-garden, along with the skills to look after it and the ability to make more.

Build your own Terrarium workshop

Plant up your own mini greenhouse in this workshop all about terrariums. Pick your preferred plants and be guided by our experts as to how to plant up and look after your own beautiful bottled terrarium. Great for beginners as well as more experienced growers. At the end of your workshop you will have a bespoke terrarium to take home and enjoy.

How to style it

Terrariums are seen all over instagram and lifestyle magazines. The blend of sleek elegant glass, juxtaposed with quirky shapes and textures of tropical plants provides an instant design hit. They look good almost anywhere, but there are a few ways to maximise their potential.

1. Location, location, location

Terrariums prefer bright, indirect light. Keep them away from direct summer sun and heat sources like radiators or fireplaces. If you don't have the ideal type of light position, you can use an artificial growing light. See our guide to indoor grow lights.

2. Get creative

Let your imagination go wild. There are a wide range of plants suitable for terrariums, so you can choose your theme and colour scheme. Why not include non-plant features, like interesting stones, fun toys, or shiny mirrors?

3. Light it up

Make the most of the glass surround by adding a few fairy lights or a battery-powered candle, for a little seasonal sparkle.

4. Gather round

Terrariums make a great focal piece, but they also play well with others. Grouped together with plants that enjoy similar conditions, they add a tropical element to your plant collection and the soft foliage of its neigbours can blend the glass into the surroundings.
