Explore a botanical perspective of tattoo design, tools and inks from prehistory to the present, at our upcoming talk, as part of our winter series of Lindley Lates. Join Art Historian, Dr Matt Lodder as we take a look at a history of plants as material, with the use of thorns and cactus spines as early tattooing tools and plant-based pigments as inks. Discover the intellectual and personal connections between Georgian botanists like Joseph Banks and the encounters with tattooing in the Pacific and investigate the perpetual popularity of plants as tattoo designs from prehistory to the present. Dr Matt Lodder is a Senior Lecturer in Art History and Theory at the University of Essex, specialising in the history of Western tattooing and body modification.

There is step-free access into the main RHS building and Library reception area via a ramped entrance. The Upper Reading Room may be accessed by three steps with a handrail for support, or via a staff-operated lift in the library reception area. We do not have accessible toilets onsite.
