Enjoy a day of drawing and watercolour techniques, working mostly outside to capture the wealth of plant inspiration that the garden offers. After an introduction to the aims of the day, we will be painting in the garden, working on portable chairs and using large clipboards. You will have the opportunity to try a series of drawing studies with expert guidance from the tutor throughout the day.

Local artist and art teacher Pete Newell, will take you through a variety of drawing materials and techniques enabling you to explore the qualities of each medium and how it relates to the subject matter you are looking at. Once initial studies have been made, you will progress to a final drawing using watercolour wash.

  • Tutor: Pete Newell is a local artist and teacher who jointly runs Quay Drawing to encourage people to improve their observational skills and thereby improve their artwork. Pete initially trained as a sculptor. After running a successful commercial sculpture business for 25 years he turned his ideas to painting. Pete is intrigued by the sea and all things maritime. He has both a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, and an MA in both Fine Art and Art History
  • Location and arrival information: The workshop will be split between the Peter Buckley Learning Centre, and outside in the Garden. If the weather makes it impossible to work outdoors, there is a good indoor space and plants to use as subjects for drawing. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and get to the Learning Centre
  • Catering: Tea / coffee and biscuits will be available in the classroom at the start of the workshop and again in the afternoon. As part of the booking process, you will choose a picnic lunch option which is included in the workshop price

For this workshop you will need:
  • Your booking reference number to show to the team at the Garden Entrance.
  • A notebook and pencil to make notes.
  • Clothing suitable for being indoors and outdoors, appropriate to weather on the day, and closed-toed shoes.
All art materials provided, and a simple folding camping chair will be provided for use on the day. However, you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Skill Level: General – I want to enjoy, discover or learn from this workshop, whatever what my existing skill level.
