We often see butterflies, moths and bees grace our garden flowers throughout the summer but perhaps don’t stop to observe them closely.  In this workshop you will study the intricate beauty of our garden visitors and have the opportunity to draw and colour one of them using coloured pencils. Under the expert guidance of award winning artist Janie Pirie, you will be shown how to make moths look ‘furry’; learn how to capture the fine details of patterned wings in insects such as a peacock or red admiral butterfly, and portray the delicate, gossamer wings of the humble bumble bee. This workshop is suitable for all levels.

Tutor: Janie Pirie

Arrival Information:
  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom.
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant.
For this workshop:
  • There will be tea/coffee available throughout.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch or the restaurant will be open from 10:30am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times, and it may be a good idea to pre-order upon your arrival.

  • Participants will need to provide their own drawing equipment and are also encouraged to bring a good quality, clear image of a chosen insect to use as reference.
  • Janie will have some images available and a good selection of pencils which can be purchased on the day.

Each student will need to bring the following:
  • Coloured Pencils: Faber-Castell Polychromos are recommended but there are many good makes on the market. Janie urges students not to purchase cheap sets from craft shops as they do not have enough pigment in them and are therefore hard to use. She also recommends not buying a small tin of 12, 24 or 36 as these contain all the primary and/or harsh colours that are rarely needed. She sells Polychromos and Prismacolor so students can purchase individual pencils on the day.
  • A good pencil sharpener: Desktop ones are best
  • Two erasers: 1 x hard plastic and 1 x kneadable putty
  • A HB pencil: For drawing, sketching & tracing
  • Good quality art paper: HOT PRESSED 300gsm – any make
  • Fine tracing paper: 63gsm
  • Masking tape
  • Cartridge paper or A4 printer paper: For sketching
