    Apple pruning

Unravel the mysteries of apple pruning during this practical demonstration. We will look at formative pruning of young apple trees and pruning of established trees that have been well maintained. We will discuss summer pruning and see how it is used to maintain our trained cordons, espaliers and fans, then compare it to winter pruning of our traditional orchard trees. This demonstration does not cover renovation of neglected trees.

Tutor: Pete Adams is a horticulturist and Team Leader for the Edibles Team at RHS Garden Rosemoor. He is responsible for the Fruit and Vegetable Garden, Potager, allotments, Forest Garden, and the teaching terrace surrounding the Peter Buckley Learning Centre with its surrounding lawns and wildlife garden.

Pete has worked at RHS Rosemoor since September 2010 since initially joining as a trainee gardener. He had previously studied a Plymouth University Bachelor of Science honours degree at Duchy College, Rosewarne in Cornwall, before working at Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Isles of Scilly in a one-year post. Over the past 16 years at Rosemoor, Pete has accomplished a huge wealth of knowledge and experience, which he regularly shares with apprentices, colleagues and the public through talks and masterclasses.

Location and arrival information: The tutor will meet you on the Visitor Centre terrace and the workshop will take place entirely outside in the garden. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and assemble on the Visitor Centre terrace.
