Are you new to growing plants indoors? Perhaps you have been given a houseplant as a gift, or inherited one in your office, or maybe chosen one in a garden centre or even supermarket, but now not really sure what to do with it? This course is for you!

Jonathan Hutchinson, part of the RHS Curatorial team, will talk you through a houseplant’s basic needs and requirements to ensure it stays healthy and keeps growing. Find out about watering, what is meant by direct and indirect sunlight, feeding, repotting and compost. By the end of the session you should feel more confident to look after your indoor plants and maybe even begin to expand your collection!

Tutor: Jonathan Hutchinson is the Team Leader for Lady Anne’s Garden at RHS Rosemoor and prior to this he was Head Gardener at Haddo House, part of the National Trust for Scotland.

Jonathan was fascinated by natural history from a young age, and being brought up with a big garden there was always the opportunity for exploration and growing a wide range of plants. After attending college at Askam Bryan and Cannington College, his training culminated at the Edinburgh Botanic Garden with the completion of the Diploma in Horticulture. A year working at the Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia, enabled Jonathan to immerse himself in their native flora and learn about a whole range of plants beyond the scope of Britain’s temperate climate.

For Jonathan, gardening or horticulture is all about plants, what they are, where they come from, how they adapt to their environment in the wild state and in cultivation, and how they can be used to bring education and enjoyment to other people.

Location and arrival information: The workshop will be based in the Peter Buckley Learning Centre. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and walk to the Learning Centre

Catering: This workshop does not include catering. You are welcome to visit the onsite catering before or after your workshop. Full details of the available outlets and what they offer are on the RHS Rosemoor Food and Drink page of the RHS website.

  • A notebook and pencil to make notes.
  • Clothing and footwear suitable for being outdoors, appropriate to weather on the day.
Skill Level: Beginner – I am eager to try growing, keen to learn, and to develop my experience and confidence.

Jonathan is leading another session on indoor plants later in the year, Houseplants - Next Steps. If you would like to continue you journey with houseplants, you can book this session on the RHS website here.
