Oshibana is the art of using pressed flowers and other botanical materials to create artwork. In this workshop, you will be taught how to collect and prepare plants for pressing, learn multiple pressing methods, make and use a strap plant press and discover how to create exquisite compositions using botanical materials, finally creating an Oshibana picture of your own. Take home your press to embark on further projects; decorate cards for family and friends, create beautiful Oshibana art and photography, or make a collection of herbarium sheets recording the plants growing in your garden.

Tutor: Marion Sidebottom is a nature-based photographer and artist who uses plants in much of her work. She has also been awarded a number of RHS medals for her work and is a brilliant teacher to guide you through this creative session.

Arrival Information:
  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom.
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. There is a mobility vehicle available to transport participants to the top of the hill if necessary.
For this workshop:
  • There will be tea/coffee available throughout. Additionally, all the taps in the learning centre provide drinking water, so we suggest the use of a reusable water bottle throughout the day.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch, or the restaurant will be open from 10:00am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times, so when you arrive at the classroom, please ask a member of staff about pre-ordering.
  • Marion will supply materials for the workshop but she recommends bringing a folder to take work home in. Optionally you are also welcome to bring, plants/flowers to press in sealed plastic bag*, newspaper - Daily Mail size, or plants you have already pressed for Oshibana picture.

*Please note there are some specific rules surrounding what plants can be bought into the garden for plant health reasons and you will be contacted closer to the time regarding this.
