Not sure where to start in your vegetable garden or allotment? This one-day workshop covers all the basics you need to get started, from assessing your site and soil to planning what to grow and when, spacing and sowing crops, and caring for them. There will be a taught session along with a visit to our Global Growth Vegetable Garden and practical demonstrations, showing you how to carry out the tasks needed to get a bountiful harvest.

Tutor: Christine Lavelle, Lecturer at Writtle University College

Arrival Information: 

  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom. 
  • This workshop will take place at the Clore Learning Centre, located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. 
  • This workshop will take place both in the classroom and outside; please wear clothing suitable for the weather.

For this workshop:

  • All materials and tools are supplied.
  • Tea and coffee will be available throughout.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch, or the restaurant will be open from 10am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times. When you arrive at the classroom, ask a member of staff about pre-ordering.
  • You are welcome to stay in the gardens afterwards if you wish to wander round.
