Decipher the language of plant names in this half day workshop. With over 4000 different plant species at Hyde Hall, this workshop gives the opportunity to deepen your understanding, gain insight into colour, shape, habit and habitat. Learn how plant hunters, explorers and collectors have contributed to botanical history, the taxonomy of plants, and understand how Latin names are used worldwide and how common names can vary. Understand plant families and how the RHS track all plants throughout the garden through plant labels and records. 

This session will look at:
  • Botanical History
  • Taxonomy and classification of plants
  • Modern techniques of identification 
  • Plant names and meanings
  • Understanding RHS plant tracking and records
 
Tutor: Jeanette Jones is a Plant Records Officer here at Hyde Hall. She will share her expert knowledge and deep understanding of the gardens with you!

Arrival Information:
  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom. 
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. There is a mobility vehicle available to transport participants to the top of the hill if necessary.

For this workshop:
  • There will be tea/coffee available.
  • This is an indoor talk and workshop including a short, guided walk – please come dressed appropriately for the weather, with suitable footwear and clothing for the outdoors.
  • You are welcome to stay in the gardens afterwards should you wish to stop for lunch and a wander round.
