In the heart of winter, plants decay to leave behind the stunning skeleton structures of seed heads. Likewise, as embroidered textiles decay, it is often the ground fabric which dissolves away over time, leaving the skeletal embroidered shapes suspended.
Inspired by this theme and surrounded by the beauty of the Wisley in winter, we will work designs based on these skeletal plant forms, selecting from honesty pods or an eryngium seed head.
Experience a wide variety of hand embroidery techniques and materials from the disciplines of whitework, wool work, silk work, metal thread and applique. We will apply fabrics and papers, ribbons, sequins and beads, work with eyelets to open the fabric further, stitch with wool and fine silk, and work needlelace.
Students may also order special box frames to fit the designs nearer the time, which are designed to allow swift mounting/display of the finished panels, suspending them over space, to allow a sense of depth. A full working kit will be provided containing all the materials required to complete the design, together with needles and fully illustrated instruction manual
