Right Plant, Right Place

Find out how to get the best from the different conditions and microclimates in your garden. Understanding and accepting that plants have varying needs and growing requirements will help to ensure you get the best from your plants, and the best from all every part of your garden.

During this walk and talk, you will visit several different areas of the garden with RHS gardener Tom King. You will see a range of growing conditions including sunny areas, shady areas, areas with good and bad drainage, and plants in walls and vertical surfaces. At each location, you will learn about suitable plants to be grown in those areas, sometimes considering adaptations that plants may have that make them suitable for these areas. You will also find out about some reliable "go to" plants that can be grown in multiple conditions across the garden.
  • Tutor: Tom King is a gardener at RHS Rosemoor and prior to that worked for several years at RHS Wisley where he was a horticulturist within the Alpine Team after completing the Wisley Diploma in Practical Horticulture. Before this, Tom spent a year training at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and two years at Capel Manor College prior to that. At RHS Rosemoor he is a member of Lady Anne’s Garden team, where he shares his knowledge and enthusiasm for plants with our visitors.
  • Location and arrival information: The tutor will meet you on the Visitor Centre terrace and the workshop will take place entirely outside in the garden. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and assemble on the Visitor Centre terrace
  • Catering: This workshop does not include catering. You are welcome to visit the onsite catering before or after your workshop. Full details of the available outlets and what they offer are on the RHS Rosemoor Food and Drink page of the RHS website
  • For this workshop you will need:
    • Your booking reference number to show to the team at the Garden Entrance.
    • A notebook and pencil to make notes.
    • Clothing suitable for being indoors and outdoors, appropriate to weather on the day.
    • Closed-toed shoes (not sandals or flipflops).
Skill Level: Upskiller – I have mastered the basics of gardening and would like to build on my horticultural knowledge and skills.
