This two-day workshop will introduce participants to an innovative and versatile method of fine art printmaking using sunlight and water. Solarplate describes the process of printmaking from light sensitive plates that have been exposed to daylight or an artificial source of UV light. The plates are developed in tap water and can be used for relief and intaglio printing. The main advantage is the plate can hold a lot of detail and offers versatility in image making – participants will be able to transform collected foliage, hand drawn originals and photographs into unique fine art prints. This course is suitable for complete beginners and for those with an interest in plants, nature printing and botanical art.
Tutor: Susie Turner works as a visual artist and educator and specialises in Fine Art printmaking. She graduated in Fine Art Printmaking from Cambridge School of Art and gained an MA in Visual Arts and Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. www.susieturner.com.
Arrival Information:
  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom.
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. There is a mobility vehicle available to transport participants to the top of the hill if necessary.
For this workshop:
  • There will be tea/coffee available throughout. Additionally, all the taps in the learning centre provide drinking water, so we suggest the use of a reusable water bottle throughout the day.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch, or the restaurant will be open from 10:00am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times, so when you arrive at the classroom, please ask a member of staff about pre-ordering.
  • All materials and tools will be provided. If you would like to work from your own imagery, guidance on how to prepare artwork in advance will be provided.
