Pollinators are an essential part of our existence, as well as enhancing the beauty within our gardens. On this course learn why pollinators are so important to humanity and how we can encourage them into our garden through careful plant selection. You will look at flower anatomy to understand why certain plants are more beneficial to pollinators than others as well as how to design an ornamental border which will attract pollinators into the garden in abundance.

Tutor: Christine Lavelle is a lecturer at Writtle University College and has a rich history working in adult education. A graduate from The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew as well as The National Trust for Scotland’s Threave School of Practical Gardening, we are thrilled to have Christine share her expertise at RHS Hyde Hall.

Arrival Information:

  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom.
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. There is a mobility vehicle available to transport participants to the top of the hill if necessary.
For this workshop:
  • All materials and tools are supplied. We encourage bringing a notebook and pen to take any notes. Please come dressed appropriately for the weather as some parts may take place outside.
  • There will be tea/coffee available throughout. Additionally, all the taps in the learning centre provide drinking water, so we suggest the use of a reusable water bottle throughout the day.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch, or the restaurant will be open from 10:00am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times, so when you arrive at the classroom, please ask a member of staff about pre-ordering.
  • You are welcome to stay in the gardens afterwards should you wish to have a wander round.
