Garden Design Days 3 and 4

Following feedback from last year’s students, we are pleased to launch two extra days of this course to extend your learning and work with you, step by step, to design your own garden.

Days 1 and 2 enable students to understand the theory and the steps to follow to create their own garden designs. Days 3 and 4 enable the students to work as a group to share their journey, with support and guidance from the tutor to facilitate the creation of garden designs that work and follow good design principles.

Specific homework and tasks based on students’ home gardens will be suggested so students can review together and learn from one another. By the end of the four-day course, you should feel confident to apply the key principles of garden design to your own garden, and feel inspired to approach a garden project with enthusiasm.

Day 4 is on Saturday 27 June, and is included when you book this session.

• Tutor: Ian Smith has over 20 years of horticultural experience across a variety of creative, practical, and educational roles, and has a passion for gardening. He has designed a range of gardens for clients, from compact spaces to large country estates. He has studied many aspects of horticulture, including completing the RHS Master of Horticulture in 2015. Ian has taught horticulture and garden design with Bicton College and the RHS, is an RHS Horticultural Advisor at RHS Rosemoor and the RHS Flower Shows, and is a trustee for the Devon Gardens Trust. He has an interest in historic gardens, their research and future development, and is keen to inspire more people to garden. 
• Location and arrival information: The workshop will take place in the Peter Buckley Learning Centre and in the garden. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and get to the Learning Centre.  
• Catering: Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available in the classroom at the start of the session and again in the afternoon. As part of the booking process, you will choose a picnic lunch option, which is included in the workshop price.
• For this workshop, you will need:
  • Your booking reference number to show to the team at the Garden Entrance. 
  • A notebook and a pencil to make notes.
  • Clothing suitable for being indoors and outdoors, appropriate to the weather on the day.
  • Closed-toed shoes (not sandals or flipflops).
  • Some photos of your own garden, including an area/areas that you are looking to redesign.
