Enjoy a captivating class at RHS Garden Hyde Hall where you will learn about the cyanotype, a photographic printing process also known as a blueprint, which was developed by Sir John Herschel in 1842. This unique technique utilizes light-sensitive iron salts that undergo a mesmerizing transformation to a distinctive blue hue when exposed to sunlight.

You will learn the complete cyanotype creation process, covering everything from mixing the chemicals and coating the paper to the crucial stages of UV light exposure and the delicate washing out process necessary for image development. You will also gain insights into various adaptations of this traditional method, including multiple exposures, masking, and the innovative use of soap bubbles and vinegar to create wet cyanotypes.

Tutor: Marion Sidebottom is a nature-based photographer and artist who uses plants in much of her work. She has also been awarded a number of RHS medals for her work and is a brilliant teacher to guide you through this creative session.

Arrival Information:
  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom.
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. There is a mobility vehicle available to transport participants to the top of the hill if necessary.
For this workshop:
  • There will be tea/coffee available throughout. Additionally, all the taps in the learning centre provide drinking water, so we suggest the use of a reusable water bottle throughout the day.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch, or the restaurant will be open from 10:00am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times, so when you arrive at the classroom, please ask a member of staff about pre-ordering.
  • Marion asks that you bring a folder to take your work home in (up to A3). You are also welcome to bring plants or other small objects to use in your prints – those with intricate detail work best.  She also advises that you wear old clothes!
*Any plant material that is carried onto site must be in a sealed plastic bag or container for plant health reasons. Some types of plant are strictly prohibited, and you will be contacted nearer the time regarding this.
