In terms of choosing for flower form, colour and scent, selection is very much a matter of personal taste. Whenever possible try to see roses in bloom before purchasing by visiting rose nurseries or rose gardens during the flowering season.

Here are some other points to consider

• For traditional roses, choose from the popular shrub roses and modern bush roses. Shrub roses include old garden roses, species (wild roses and hybrids), modern shrub roses and groundcover roses. Modern bush roses include large-flowered
  A hybrid plant is the offspring produced by cross-pollinating one specific cultivar with another different cultivar. This process of cross-pollination, rather than pollination between plants of the same cultivar, generally creates stronger, healthier, improved offspring, said to have ‘hybrid vigour’.

  hybrid teas, cluster-flowered floribundas, patio roses and miniatures. These groups have different pruning requirements
• Climbers tend to repeat-flower, whereas ramblers flower impressively but only once, usually in June
• Roses can be grown in pots. Smaller roses are the most successful and there is a wide choice of patio and miniature roses available

Selling names
Most plants are sold under only one name or trade designation but some, especially roses, may be sold under a number of names particularly when cultivars are introduced from other countries. A trade designation is used to market a plant when a cultivar name is considered unsuitable for selling purposes so both cultivar name and trade designation are quoted. For example Rosa Gertrude Jekyll = ‘Ausbord’ (S) AGM. Gertrude Jekyll is the trade designation and ‘Ausbord’ is the cultivar name.
