Rare birch species found usually in thickets in the wild, about 4m in height forming a small, spreading, multi-stemmed shrub, with brown young shoots ageing to grey, and metallic-grey bark. Large rich green leaves about 5cm long, turn bright yellow in autumn; stout greenish-brown catkins are produced in early spring
