It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Cabaret' is a tall, clump-forming grass up to nearly 2.5m high. The dark green leaves, up to around 32mm wide, have a broad central white stripe and are topped in the autumn by coppery-pink flowerheads that turn a silver colour as they mature
R. paniculatus is a bushy, much-branched, evergreen, rhizomatous perennial, producing erect stems up to 2m in height and spreading up to 5m across. The stems are olive green with some purple spotting
'Albolineata' is a compact evergreen grass to 2m, with narrow white-margined leaves and silvery plumes of flower in summer
'Variegatus' is a clump-forming deciduous grass to 2m tall, with narrow arching leaves striped with white, and sometimes sparse, reddish flowerheads in early autumn
'Malepartus' is a vigorous, free-flowering deciduous grass to 2m tall, with arching leaves with white midribs, and proific, pink-tinged flower heads soon ageing to silver, opening in late summer
R. subverticillatus is a tufted, reed-like perennial with erect to arching dark green, almost woody stems with whorls of thread-like green leaves or modified branches growing from each node, giving a fountain effect. Stems grow to 2m in height, forming clumps to 1.5m wide. Male and female plants are separate (dioecious). White female flowers are borne on masses of thin stems in spring, followed by grey-brown shiny nutlets in autumn. Male flowers are yellow-green, maturing through bronze to grey
'Cornish Gold' is a tufted, evergreen, rhizomatous perennial with graceful stems of light green banded with golden-yellow. Flowers on this male plant are born in brown spikelets in summer
A. donax var. versicolor is a robust evergreen grass with strong stems to 2m tall, bearing strap-shaped leaves to 30cm long, striped with white and green. Feathery panicles of small, purplish flowers may appear in late autumn
S. pseudoichu is a tall, perennial, deciduous grass producing an upright clump of very narrow, bright green leaves and slender, arching, silvery-green plumes, to 1.8m, in summer
M. sacchariflorus is a vigorous, upright deciduous grass to 2.5m or more in height, the long arching leaves 3cm wide, with a prominent white midrib; in autumn, fan-shaped silky flowering panicles appear, lasting into winter
