It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Cole's Select' is a vigorous, multi-stemmed tree or shrub, up to 8m high, with light grey bark and ovate leaves, up to 8cm long, which open bronze in early spring, become shiny, dark green in late spring and turn vivid orange and red in autumn. Hanging clusters of starry white flowers in mid-spring are followed in late summer by edible juicy blue-black fruits
'Ballerina' is a vigorous small tree or large shrub with bronze-tinged young leaves which turn orange to purple-brown in autumn. Flowers white, relatively large, in short, somewhat nodding racemes. Fruit a small red berry, turning deep purple but soon taken by birds
'Prince Charles' is an upright-growing large, dense shrub or small tree. Scented, white flowers are produces in drooping clusters in spring just ahead of the bronze-tinted young leaves. Purple-black berries follow, with showy, red and orange autumn leaf colour
'R J Hilton' forms a spreading tree in time with deep copper young leaves in spring together with white flowers opening from pink buds. These are followed by blue-black berries in summer and red and orange leaf tints in autumn
A. lamarckii is a large erect deciduous shrub or small tree of open habit, with bronze-tinged young leaves turning orange and red in autumn. White flowers in short lax racemes as the leaves unfurl. Fruit a red to dark purple-black berry, soon eaten by birds
'Rubescens' is a multi-stemmed tree or shrub, up to 8m high, with light grey bark, and ovate leaves, up to 8cm long, which open bronze in early spring, become green in late spring and turn orange and red in autumn. Hanging clusters of dark pink buds open to pale blush-pink flowers in mid-spring and are followed in late summer by edible, juicy blue-black fruits
'Princess Diana' forms a broad, upright shrub or small tree with pale bronze young foliage and white flowers in spring, followed by purplish-blue fruit in summer and red, yellow and orange autumn colour
'La Paloma' is a small tree or large shrub with red-bronze foliage and drooping sprays of white flowers in spring. Foliage turns orange and red in autumn
'Obelisk' is a small, very slender tree or large shrub with upswept branches and bronze young leaves, maturing to green then orange-yellow in autumn. Dense, terminal racemes of pure-white flowers, with green centres, are produced in abundance in mid-spring and followed by edible scarlet fruits, maturing to black
'Robin Hill' forms a dense, upright small tree, spreading with age. The pale pink flowers open from pink buds then fade to white, and are followed by dark purple berries. The foliage opens bronzy, turns green in summer and produces orange and red shades in autumn
