It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
P. viridiglaucescens is a robust, very vigorous bamboo with green canes, maturing to yellow-green, with plentiful bright green leaves, glaucous beneath to 15cm long. Forms a thicket in ideal condtions
P. flexuosa has slightly glossy green wavy canes to 3m tall, which mature to yellow-brown then almost black, with narrow glossy, dark green leaves to 15cm in length which retain their colour through winter
'Castillonii' is a highly ornamental, robust bamboo with thick golden-yellow canes to 4.5m high, striped green in the grooves, and glossy, dark-green lance-shaped leaves to 15cm in length
P. aureosulcata f. aureocaulis has pale, golden-yellow canes to 5m or more, reddish when young, sometimes striped with green near the base, bearing lance-shaped mid-green leaves
'P. vivax f. aureocaulis is a vigorous bamboo with tall upright, golden-yellow canes, to 8m high, striped with green bearing dense, drooping leaves to 20cm in length
P. aurea is a graceful evergreen bamboo producing large clumps of bright green canes 2.5-3.5m high becoming yellowish with age and exposure. Leaves linear-lanceolate are yellow to golden-green , to 18cm in length
'H. tranquillans 'Shiroshima' is a slowly spreading bamboo with slender upright canes, and bold dark green leaves streaked creamy-white, to 25cm in length
P. nigra is a large, elegant evergreen bamboo with arching canes, green at first becoming blackish-brown with maturity, and narrow-lanceolate leaves to 12cm in length
'Holochrysa' is a robust bamboo to 8m tall in mild locations, with rich yellow canes, occasionally striped with green, and narrowly lance-shaped leaves to 20cm long
P. nigra f. henonis is an evergreen bamboo with tall, graceful bright green young canes, brownish-yellow when mature, 2.5-4m high, with abundant narrowly-lanceolate glossy dark green leaves to 10cm in length.
