P. likiangensis is a conical or columnar coniferous tree, to 25m tall, that shows a marked degree of variation within the species. Young shoots are a pale brown or red colour and the bark becomes grey and fissured with age. Its flattened needle-like leaves are 1-2cm long, bluish-green above and glaucous beneath with those on the upper side of the shoot pointing forwards. The ovoid cones, up to 10cm long, are red when young maturing to a pale brown
'Nidiformis' is a dense, spreading, flat-topped evergreen dwarf shrub, wider than tall, with short dark green needles
'Inversa' is a large, coniferous shrub, to 9m tall, with dense, dark green foliage. The main and secondary branches of this cultivar are quite pendulous and adpressed to the upright trunk
'Little Gem' is a very slow-growing evergreen conifer forming a squat, globose bun with short, dense, dark green needle-like leaves, the new growth in spring brighter green
'Nana' is a slow-growing evergreen conifer making a dwarf shrub of dense rounded habit, with grey-green, needle-like foliage
'Alberta Globe' is a slow-growing dwarf conifer forming a globose plant with very short needles
P. omorika is an evergreen conifer forming a graceful, slender tree of narrowly conical habit, with dark foliage, whitish beneath, in drooping sprays curving up at the tips
P. asperata is a conical or columnar coniferous tree to 25m. The needle-like leaves are dark green or blue-green about 2cm long, stiff and upward pointing. The green then light brown, cylindrical, female cones can be up to 15cm long
P. breweriana is an evergreen conifer forming a medium-sized tree of broadly conical habit, with drooping curtains of dark green foliage, and oblong purplish cones to 10cm in length
P. abies is a fast-growing, dense conifer, to 30m tall, narrowly-conical when young becoming broader with age. Dark green, glossy, needle-like leaves, to 2.5cm long, cover the upper side of the branchlets. The light brown cones taper at the top, reaching up to 15cm long and 5cm wide
