RHS Rosemoor Winter Garden

Help us transform and re-develop the Winter Garden at RHS Garden Rosemoor, Devon, and bring a renewed sense of magic and wonder to everyone who visits this beautiful space for years to come

Jo Thompson’s Winter Garden design

Expanding the landscape

Created in 1996, the Winter Garden was the last of the formal ‘garden rooms’ to be created, and, at the time, marked the boundary of Rosemoor’s cultivated landscape. It sits below three Model Gardens – the West Country Town Garden, Terrace Garden and Award of Garden Merit (AGM) Garden, also created in the late 1990s.

Our exciting new design, created by Garden Designer Jo Thompson, will double the size of the Winter Garden by refocusing and merging it with the three Model Gardens, creating a new unified landscape that will show off stunning winter features and transform this part of the garden.

Revitalising the Planting

Winter is a special time in the garden, revealing a host of texture, colour and structure not seen in other seasons. However, over the years, the Winter Garden has lost its original drama and wow factor.

The planting palette of the new design will help re-capture that magic. Low-level planting will open up vistas across the garden, and new island beds will bring in colour and interest through the use of enchanting drifts of herbaceous planting and grasses. Jo’s design also includes beautiful mature trees – a rare Fraxinus profunda (pumpkin ash), a Catalpa, a stand of birch and Japanese maples – giving the space an instant sense of maturity and presence.
