Overview

This is a practical qualification aimed at those in full-time education, or assisted learning, with an interest in plants and gardening. This qualification helps learners to begin to develop their horticultural knowledge, learn essential horticultural skills and prepares them to progress towards level 2 and 3 qualifications.


Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites for entry to this qualification.


Course Content

The qualification consists of six units covering the following subject areas:

  • Preparing soil for sowing and planting
  • Assist with the propagation of plants from seed
  • Assist with the vegetative propagation of plants
  • Assist with planting and establishing plants
  • Soil testing
  • Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests and diseases

Course details

Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning is one of the four main qualification suites for 14 to 19-year-olds, alongside GCSEs and A levels, diplomas and apprenticeships. As part of the Foundation Learning tier this qualification provides a new and flexible learning programme for young people and adults working at level 1.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of a range of practical activities timetabled and assessed within your approved centre.
