When designing a garden, it can be difficult to know where to begin. How do you assess the space, draw up a plan and start planting? Led by lecturer and author Christine Lavelle, this workshop will help you look at your garden to get the most out of your space. Explore the fundamental principles of garden design including garden aspect, soil type, colour palette, plant choices, and border design. With considered design and thoughtful planting, every size garden can deliver maximum impact and become a space to be proud of.

Tutor: Christine Lavelle, Lecturer at Writtle University College

Arrival Information:
  • Please arrive 15 mins before the start of the workshop to allow time to register your arrival and make your way to the classroom.
  • This workshop will take place in the Clore Learning Centre, which is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Gardeners Rest Restaurant. There is a mobility vehicle available to transport participants to the top of the hill if necessary.

For this Workshop:
  • All materials and tools are supplied.
  • We encourage bringing a notebook and pen to take any notes.
  • Please come dressed appropriately for the weather as some parts may take place outside.
  • There will be tea/coffee available throughout. Additionally, all the taps in the learning centre provide drinking water, so we suggest the use of a reusable water bottle throughout the day.
  • You are welcome to bring along a packed lunch, or the restaurant will be open from 10am to purchase food/refreshments. Please note that the restaurant can get busy during peak times, so when you arrive at the classroom, please ask a member of staff about pre-ordering.
  • You are welcome to stay in the gardens afterwards should you wish to have a wander round.
