Autumn Colours in Needlefelt

Capture the colours of autumn in needle-felt, using British wool and inspired by the autumn leaves and other seasonal colour at RHS Rosemoor. The workshop will begin with some time in the garden to look at the autumn colour, collect some fallen leaves and to generally seek inspiration from the colours and shapes of the season.

Artist and tutor Julie Vickery will demonstrate and gently teach from an artist’s perspective how to recreate your chosen leaves by ‘painting with wool’. You will learn step by step about the equipment and the process of needle felting, about composition, perspective, how to build up layers and fine details. The technique includes using barbed needles to produce a 15 cm square piece of art ready to frame.

Tutor: Julie Vickery has been teaching using a variety of media for over 20 years. Inspired by nature and the local landscape, her needlefelts are created with British wool mainly from Dartmoor and Exmoor sheep and purchased from local mills. Starting out as a florist in Warwickshire and working for 10 years creating bespoke wedding flowers, Julie attended university, graduating with a BA (hons) 1^st Illustration, to become a fully qualified Secondary School Art Teacher.

Julie now teaches from home on the edge of Dartmoor as well as teaching on-line courses and workshops. Julie also exhibits and produces her own artwork. She works in a variety of mediums including acrylics and inks, oil pastels mixed media and of course wonderful wool! 

Location and arrival information: The workshop will take place mostly in the Peter Buckley Learning Centre, with some time also spent outside in the garden for inspiration. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and get to the Learning Centre.  

Catering: Tea / coffee and biscuits will be available in the classroom at the start of the workshop and again in the afternoon. As part of the booking process, you will choose a picnic lunch which is included in the workshop price.

For this workshop you will need:

• Your booking reference number to show to the team at the Garden Entrance. 
• A notebook and pencil to make notes.
• Camera or phone to take photos for inspiration and reference.
• Bring a coat or suitable outer later as part of the day will be spent seeking inspiration from the garden.
