Celebrate one of RHS Garden Rosemoor's most popular plant collections – the rose. This workshop offers the opportunity to think about adding new roses to your garden and to find out how to get the very best out of them.

While winter may not be the time for admiring our roses, it is certainly an important time to be thinking about them. It is a great time of year for planting, and also an important time for training and maintaining your roses.

This afternoon is all about sharing a passion for roses. Viv will talk you through choosing and planting roses in different positions and situations, pruning and training techniques for climbers, ramblers, shrub and bush roses, and discuss common problems and plant health challenges.

Part of the afternoon will be spent outside in the rose gardens, looking at the varieties planted at Rosemoor, finding out how they are maintained, and seeking inspiration from the forms and training techniques used.

Included in the workshop price will be either a book or a related plant / planting project for you to take home to continue your journey with roses.

Tutor: Viv Hunt was previously Head Gardener at an RHS partner garden in Kent. She has trained many younger gardeners through the Professional Gardeners Guild training scheme and presented regular workshops for amateur gardeners. She is now a garden consultant working in private gardens in Devon and the South East.

Location and arrival information: The workshop will take place mostly in the Peter Buckley Learning Centre, with some time also spent outside in the Garden. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and get to the Learning Centre.

Catering: Tea / coffee and biscuits will be available in the classroom.

For this workshop you will need:
  • Your booking reference number to show to the team at the Garden Entrance.
  • A notebook and pencil to make notes.
  • Wear clothes and shoes suitable to the weather on the day as some of the session will be spent outdoors / in the Garden.
Skill Level:  Upskiller – I have mastered the basics of gardening, and would like to build on my horticultural knowledge and skills.
