Growing plants in our indoor spaces is a very rewarding aspect of horticulture that can extend a passion for plants well beyond those that are suitable for growing outdoors.  All plants need the correct regime of temperature, air, light and moisture to maintain healthy growth. Understanding how these requirements work together is an important factor in developing your skills with houseplants to enable increased confidence so that you can develop your very own indoor jungle!

Jonathan Hutchinson, part of the RHS Curatorial team, will guide you through some propagation techniques so that you can expand your houseplant collection.

This workshop is a perfect follow on from the Houseplants for Beginners workshop in February, designed to help you develop skills and confidence with your houseplants.

Tutor: Jonathan Hutchinson is the Team Leader for Lady Anne’s Garden at RHS Rosemoor and prior to this he was Head Gardener at Haddo House, part of the National Trust for Scotland.
Jonathan was fascinated by natural history from a young age, and being brought up with a big garden there was always the opportunity for exploration and growing a wide range of plants. After attending college at Askam Bryan and Cannington College, his training culminated at the Edinburgh Botanic Garden with the completion of the Diploma in Horticulture. A year working at the Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia, enabled Jonathan to immerse himself in their native flora and learn about a whole range of plants beyond the scope of Britain’s temperate climate.

For Jonathan, gardening or horticulture is all about plants, what they are, where they come from, how they adapt to their environment in the wild state and in cultivation, and how they can be used to bring education and enjoyment to other people.

Location and arrival information: The tutor will meet you on the Visitor Centre terrace and the workshop will take place entirely outside in the garden. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and assemble on the Visitor Centre terrace.

Catering: This workshop does not include catering. You are welcome to visit the onsite catering before or after your workshop. Full details of the available outlets and what they offer are on the RHS Rosemoor Food and Drink page of the RHS website.

For this workshop you will need:
  • Your booking reference number to show to the team at the Garden Entrance.
  • A notebook and pencil to make notes.
Skill Level: Upskiller – I have mastered the basics of gardening and would like to build my horticultural knowledge and skills.
