Become immersed in nature and art during this two-day mixed-media painting workshop on canvas, inspired by the garden's colours, foliage, and fauna.
Begin with time in the garden, seeking inspiration and capturing ideas with photos on your phone. This is an opportunity to take time to look, slow down and notice the little things in nature. We will collect fallen plant materials for inspiration and to construct a still-life arrangement in the classroom.
Tutor Emmeline Webb will guide you to explore mixed media materials and techniques, expressive mark-making, palettes and colour wheels, using wax, oil pastel, inks & acrylic paint, which can then dry overnight before Day Two…
Your second day will be a full day of painting, including using your favourite elements created from yesterday. Working from botanical forms and printed resources, you will map out your plant structures. Emmeline will take you through this process, teaching you how to work in this layered, almost printmaking-styled approach to painting.
Towards the end of the day, you will work on finer details using acrylic paint markers and iridescent and metallic inks. You will leave with a finished work of art on canvas, perfect to hang on the wall once fully dried.
Tutor: Emmeline Webb returned to art education as a mature student, gaining a BA (hons) in Illustration from Cambridge School of Art in 2008. Since then, she has been encouraging others to find their artistic voice and benefit from the restorative effects of making art, and she has 15 years of experience teaching art workshops to teens and adults. Emmeline's workshops are suited to all abilities, with an emphasis on relaxation, exploration of art materials and ultimately fun.
Location and arrival information: The workshop will take place mostly in the Peter Buckley Learning Centre, with some time also spent outside in the Garden. Please allow 15 minutes to park in the main visitor car park, enter the garden and get to the Learning Centre.
Catering: Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available in the classroom at the start of the workshop and again in the afternoon. As part of the booking process, you will choose a picnic lunch option, which is included in the workshop price.
