Large, upright, deciduous, shrubby tree about 12m in height, with large 7-9 lobed ferny, deep green leaves divided three-quarters of the way to the leaf base, producing brilliant purple-scarlet and flame-red autumn colour. Inconspicuous hanging clusters of small, purple-red flowers in spring are followed by red-flushed, winged fruits
