A small-sized, semi-terrestrial, evergreen orchid. Three to five, oval-elliptic leaves are leathery, dull, dark green mottled with pale green, with purple spots below. The leaves are up to 14cm long and 2-3cm wide. Solitary flowers up to 10cm across are large compared to the size of plants. Terminal flowering stems up to 25cm long emerge from the centre of the leaf rosettes in spring and summer. Characteristic, inflated lip is round, larger than petals and sepals, usually white or pale pink. Petals and upper sepals are pale green and pink with darker tesselated pattern.
