Synonyms
Cypripedium veitchianum
A small, semi-terrestrial, clump-forming orchid, with mottled dark and light green leaves, up to 25cm long and 4-7cm wide. Solitary flowers, 7-10cm across, appear from the centre of the leaf rosettes and are carried on 15 -30cm long, dark purple, upright stems. The pouch is a modification of the lip that traps insects and consequently provides an ''escape route'' that results in pollen collection and flower pollination. The pouch is purple brown, petals are narrow with brown-purple spotting. Dorsal sepal is white with green and purple stripes.
