A rounded, bushy shrub to about 1.5m, with broad, slightly serrated, dark green foliage. The lacecap flowers have dense clusters of small, fertile florets in the centre, surrounded by large, widely spaced, infertile florets with pointed petals. The flowers, produced from late summer, are blue on acid soil and pink on alkaline soil, both colours fading to dark pink and green in late autumn
