A tall, tuberous-rooted perennial to about 1.2m with mid-green foliage. Very dark red, almost black, cactus form flowers, 20cm across, are produced from mid-summer until the first frost. The outer petals are strongly quilled, creating a spidery effect

How to Grow

Cultivation

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter, in full sun. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy plants and stake – see staking perennials. Propagation

Propagate by softwood cuttings taken in spring from shoots from stored tubers, or divide the tubers, ensuring each section has at least one viable bud

Pruning
