A vigorous, vertical or bushy shrub or small tree up to 6m in height with green foliage in summer becoming purplish-red in autumn. Masses of slightly overlapping, rounded, petal-like bracts ranging from pale pink to medium pink, depending on the seasonal conditions, are arranged in fours around the central greenish yellow sterile flower clusters. Seedless fruit develop after flowering
