A large, rounded deciduous shrub with coarsely-toothed, oval leaves, dark green above, paler below, both surfaces covered in hairs. Clusters of white flowers are produced in early summer, followed by berries that start orange-yellow then turn red. The foliage takes on purplish-bronze tints in autumn
