A deciduous shrub to 1.2m high, with ovate, serrated green leaves that tint red in the sun. In summer, large lace-cap flower heads bear loose clusters of tiny fertile flowers, surrounded by large, showy florets with strongly scalloped edges. Flowers are generally shades of lilac, though colour varies depending on the pH of the soil
