A compact and spreading, deciduous shrub, the branches often developing conspicuous corky wings. The oval leaves are variegated, a sliver green centre with a narrow white border, turning rosy-crimson in autumn. Flowers small, greenish, followed by purplish-red fruits splitting to reveal orange seeds
