Densely-tufted, deciduous, perennial grass about 1m tall, producing an upright mound of fine-textured, glaucous, light blue leaves tinted deep pink and burgundy in late summer. Upright, silvery blue flowers appear during late summer and autumn. The whole plant usually turns colours of red, orange and copper in autumn and winter
