A deciduous shrub to 1.2m high, with ovate, serrated green leaves that turn bright red and orange in autumn. In summer, loose lace-cap type flower heads open to clusters of tiny fertile flowers, with larger florets held on short, delicate stems around the edges. Flower colour varies depending on the pH of the soil, from pale pink to soft blue, and deepens as the flowers age
