A deciduous climber to about 2m, flowering in late spring to early summer on old wood and again from late summer to early autumn on new wood. The rosette-like, purpleflowers have six to eight large outer petals and a double centre but both the depth of colour and the flower shape can vary from plant to plant

How to Grow

Cultivation

Plant in a moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base. Plant with the crown 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level. Can be grown in containers at least 45cm (18in) deep and wide in a peat-free, loam-based potting compost. Propagate by double leaf-bud, semi-ripe cuttings taken from spring to late summer, or by layering from late winter to spring
