An evergreen coniferous tree, with a broadly pyramidal crown, growing up to 30 metres high in optimal conditions. The needle-like foliage is dark green, with 2 narrow greenish-white stomatal lines on the underside. Needles are narrow and soft in texture, 1.2 - 3.5cm long and 1mm wide. Young seed cones (5-8cm long) are purple-brown, maturing to dark brown.
