Vigorous, deciduous climber about 3m tall, with mid-green leaves, and single, large, flowers to 20cm across, with wavy margins and slightly twisted petals, purple in colour with a bright cerise-pink cental bar, the reverse of each petal has a greenish bar with mauve margins, and dark red anthers. Large flowers are produced from late spring to early summer, then smaller flowers in late summer to early autumn

How to Grow

Cultivation

Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base. Plant with the crown 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level. See clematis cultivation

Propagate by softwood cuttings in spring, semi-ripe cuttings in early summer or layering
