An early, dessert apple with a dark red flush virtually covering the yellow skin, and crisp, white flesh with a distinctive, strawberry-like flavour fresh off the tree, but soon going soft. Rather weak, spreading trees crop in late summer and the fruit is best eaten straight away. Partially self-fertile, but crops better with a group 1, 2 or 3 pollinator. The name is derived from Caretan in Normandy
