C.alnifolia, the sweet pepper bush is an erect, bushy, suckering shrub not usually exceeding 2m. The fresh green leaves are simple, obovate, neatly serrrate, sometimes turning yellow in autumn. Near-white scented flowers are abundantly produced, in erect terminal racemes, in summer. Pink selections are available
'Hummingbird' is a compact shrub, up to 1.2m high, with glossy dark green leaves which turn yellow in autumn. Many feathery spikes of sweetly clove-scented white flowers appear in mid- to late summer
'Ruby Spice' is a vigorous shrub, up to 1.5m high, with glossy dark green leaves which turn yellow in autumn. Numerous short spikes of sweetly clove-scented rich pink flowers (which unlike some cultivars, are not prone to fading) appear in late summer and early autumn
'Sixteen Candles' is a compact, upright, deciduous shrub with glossy foliage turning yellow in autumn. Bears groups of upright, tapering, candle-like spikes of sweet-scented, white flowers in summer
'Paniculata' is a bushy deciduous medium-sized shrub with finely-toothed, obovate leaves, and small fragrant white flowers in panicles at the shoot-tips
