It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
S. ruscifolia is a small, slow-growing, evergreen shrub with glossy, oval leaves and small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers in winter followed by dark red berries
S. wallichii is a loosely-clumping evergreen shrub, up to 2m tall, with glossy, lanceolate leaves, to 10cm long, on tall, arching stems. The small, scented, white winter flowers are followed by black fruits
S. orientalis is a compact, bushy, evergreen shrub to 1m tall and wide. Stout shoots bear oval to lanceolate, glossy leaves, up to 9cm long, that taper to a point. Fragrant, creamy-white flowers, the males tinged pink, are borne in winter and followed by black fruits
S. confusa is a bushy evergreen shrub to 2m, with glossy, deep green, wavy ovate leaves 3-5cm in length and, in winter, inconspicuous, very sweetly scented, creamy-white flowers, followed by glossy black berries
S. hookeriana var. humilis is a compact suckering shrub to 60cm tall, forming a neat clump of glossy, elliptic leaves, with small clusters of very fragrant creamy-white flowers with crimson anthers, in winter, followed by black berries
S. hookeriana var. hookeriana is a suckering evergreen shrub forming a compact thicket of upright stems bearing leathery, lance-shaped or elliptic leaves and tiny, but very fragrant white flowers in late winter, followed by black berries
Winter Gem is an upright, dense shrub, to around 70cm high, with glossy, dark-green leaves and highly-scented white flowers, opening from red buds, in winter. Flowers are followed by spherical fruit that ripen from red to black
'Dragon Gate' is a compact shrub bearing small, scented, cream flowers in winter followed by red berries in summer. Evergreen leaves are small, glossy and dark green
S. saligna is a compact, suckering, evergreen shrub, to 1m tall, with tapering, lance-shaped, glossy leaves, up to 13cm long, held on erect then arching stems. Tiny greenish-white, slightly-scented flowers in winter are followed by purple berries
S. hookeriana is a small, bushy evergreen shrub with bright green, lance-shaped or oval leaves 4-6cm in length, and tiny, very fragrant, creamy-white flowers followed by glossy black berries
